At H Williams & Associates we use a specialist consultant in special care dentistry to carry our all sedation procedures. This ensures our patients have the very best care before, during and after their dental treatment.
Hello, I'm Dr Damien Reilly...
I’m a Consultant in Special Care Dentistry with a Diploma in Conscious Sedation for Dentistry. I have extensive experience providing dental sedation and I have been teaching dental sedation to clinical professionals since 2004. I am a faculty member of the Society for Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry (SAAD). I speak nationally and internationally on dental sedation and related topics and have multiple peer-reviewed publications in journals including the British Dental Journal and the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
I used to dread my own visits to the dentist, so I have a longstanding interest in the use of dental sedation to make treatment easier. I have dedicated my career to helping the most anxious and challenging of patients and I understand very well the complexities of dentistry and of dental anxiety. Over the years, I have recognised the significant extent to which sedation can make treatment easier for dentists as well as patients. A relaxed patient tends to result in a relaxed, more focussed dentist.
Very professional, extremely personable. Despite the daunting prospect of a deep filling, the experience was handled with care and understanding. Every step of the procedure was explained fully and I would warmly recommend this dental practice.
The Types of Sedation Available at H Williams & Associates Dental Care
Here are the two different types of sedation available to you.
Oral Sedation
This can range from minimal to moderate sedation. You can take a pill of Halcion, for instance, an hour or so before the procedure, making you drowsy but still awake. This is minimal sedation, which may be increased to moderate sedation. We usually associate the effect with sedation dentistry, where the patient falls asleep during the procedure but can easily awaken after.
IV sedation (Midazolam)
If you feel anxious about dental treatment, IV sedation can help you stay calm and comfortable throughout your visit. At our practice, we use midazolam, a safe and effective medication that helps you relax deeply while remaining conscious and able to respond to your dentist.
What is IV sedation?
IV (intravenous) sedation involves delivering a sedative medication directly into your bloodstream through a small injection in your arm or hand. The effects begin quickly and allow you to feel peaceful, sleepy, and unconcerned about the dental procedure. You will still be able to communicate, but most patients remember very little of the treatment afterwards.
The benefits of IV sedation
- Anyone fearful or anxious may benefit from sedation. It may also be beneficial for people who have the following:
- Deep relaxation and relief from anxiety or fear
- Little or no memory of the procedure
- Fast-acting and easily controlled by your dentist
- Quick recovery compared to general anaesthesia
- Ideal for longer or more complex treatments
Is IV Sedation safe?
Yes. Midazolam has an excellent safety record when administered by trained professionals. Your breathing, heart rate, and oxygen levels will be continuously monitored throughout the procedure. You’ll also be cared for by a fully qualified sedation dentist and trained dental nurse.
After treatment, you’ll need someone to accompany you home and stay with you for the rest of the day, as you may feel drowsy for a few hours.
Who can benefit?
IV sedation is suitable for patients who:
- Feel nervous or anxious about dental visits
- Have a strong gag reflex or difficulty getting numb
- Need longer or more involved treatments
- Have had previous negative dental experiences
Before the treatment
Your dentist will review your medical history and explain what to expect.
During the treatment
The sedative will be administered and you’ll quickly feel relaxed and sleepy.
After the treatment
You’ll rest until you’re fully awake and ready to go home with your companion.
